Absinthe Mata Hari
Absinthe Mata Hari

In case you are curious as to what you should do with the bottle of Mata Hari you just purchased, Mata Hari came up with a few recipes you may like to try.  However, before you do there are two Absinthe rituals to consider first.

Fire Ritual: A sugar cube is placed on a slotted spoon and Absinthe is poured over the sugar.  The remaining undiluted sugar is lit on fire and caramelizes into the glass.  But before the flame starts to drop, it is extinguished with the ice cold water creating the louche effect.  (The Intoxicologist of course cautions all imbibers to use sound judgment when using this particular method.  Those who play with fire, may get burned.)

Traditional Ritual: A sugar cube is placed on a slotted spoon.  Ice cold water is poured over a the slotted spoon or from a fountain (broullieur) so that the water SLOWLY drips over the sugar cube and into the glass, creating the louche effect.

Mata Hari has some shaker friendly recipes to enjoy whether you are just starting out with Absinthe or already an Absinthe fan.  Kick back, relax and find a new favorite.

Interesting Absinthe fact:  Belle Époque (French for “Beautiful Era”)…When phylloxera devastated Europe’s vineyards in the late 1800’s, wine became very expensive, so folks looked around for an alternative alcohol source…and found Absinthe filled the bill. That’s why Absinthe is commonly associated with the Fin de Siecle (turn of the century late 1800’s-early 1900’s ) community of artists and writers when it reached its height of popularity.
