I had my first taste ever of a Pappy Van Winkle product in Kansas City, Missouri, this weekend in the Power & Light District at the Maker’s Mark Bourbon House & Lounge.  After hearing about this particular brand in snippets and pieces through the grapevine it was interesting to finally get a taste of this legendary Pappy Van Winkle product.  Interesting does not quite cut it.  Phenomenal, extraordinary, fabulous!  Yes, those are a few words that come to mind off the top of my head.

Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye_13yrRyeLabelOfficial Van Winkle Reserve Rye Notes:

13 years old – 47.8% abv (95.6 proof)

“Until now, most rye whiskeys were only 5 years old or younger. This 13-year rye breaks the mold. It’s the original aged rye whiskey. The maturity it has received while aging is quite obvious when you take the first sip. Flavors include cocoa, vanilla, spice and white pepper. Rye whiskey lovers who try this bottling will never again look back at the younger versions.” Pappy Van Winkle Site

Paul Pacult’s Spirit Journal `Rating:  Five Stars

As it happens with Pappy Van Winkle’s reputation, The Intoxicologist thoughts on the spirit may not be all that important.  However the flavors the website highlights is one of the most accurate descriptions I’ve seen recently regarding tasting notes.  It is easy, to the point without any flowery rendition.  To the point, if you like a good Rye Whiskey it is almost without question you will certainly love the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye.  My objective now is to find my own bottle for a more thorough sampling, which really means sit back, relax and enjoy it.

  1. I tried Rip Van Winkle 15 and 20 year olds at a dinner about a year ago. Different I know, but this post made me think of it. It was paired with creme brulee and it was amazing! I actually liked the 15 year better. I love your blog. I think I’ve said it before. I wish I had more time just to browse for hours. One of the days…

    • Thanks for the comment Jill. The Rip Van Winkle I sampled was amazing. I can only imagine other varieties are equally if not more so. And why not with creme brullee?! Happy you enjoyed it.
